Patchouli...it's more medicinal than you might have thought...

Ah...Patchouli Oil.. the scent of the 60's. One of the reasons most people of that time used it, was to cover up the smell of marijuanna. Insence was also used, and the most favorite scent purchased? Yup, patchouli.

But with doing a little research, I also found that patchouli had other wonderful properties. Till this day, I adore the scent, espeically when mixed with a bit of sandalwood..but that's for another article..back to patchouli.

First off the Latin name for this oil is Pogostemon Cablin. It is extratced from the leaves of the herb by steam distillation, and it's country of origin is Indonesia.

As for it's medicinal properties, there are a host of them.. It has been used as an antidepressant, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, antimicrobial, carminitive, astrigent, expectorant, fungicidal, sedative, tonic, decongestant, and an insecticide. It is also non-toxic and non-irritant.

Patchouli also supports a healthy uterus, and provides support against acne, and the digestive and nervous systems. It is a stimulating aromatic oil that promotes increased feelings of desire. When diffused it helps to create an amorous atmosphere. (hint-hint) So embrace the musky, sweet armoa as it calms skin cells and enhances the appearance of younger-looking skin.

This wonderful oil has the physical benefits of aiding in acne, athlete's foot, cell regeneration, dandruff, dry skin, ecezma, enlarged pores, fungal infections, impetigo, insect repellent, oily skin, scars, varicose veins, wrinkles, wounds and sores. Patchouli also has wonderful psyso-emotional benefits as well, which include it being an aphrodisiac, it dispells nervous tension, lightens stress, clears confusion, lowers anxiety and dissipates anger.

You can also add a few drops to your bath water or mix it in a non-scented moisturizing lotion. Massage it into the skin for arthritis, hair loss, rheumatism, and dry skin conditions. For oily skin, add a few drops to boiling water and lean over it with towel to give yourself a wonderful seam facial while reducing stress and tension.

And you thought it only smelled good...
