Those 50's Eyes! How to create vintage makeup looks today. The 1950's saw huge changes in society and of course, this included the role of fashion. Years of deprivation, rationing and untilitarian clothing fuelled the public's need to buy. The public n longer wanted functional, practical clothing, it demanded feminine and extravagant ensembles.
Naturally, the fashion world was eager to help, and the ready-to-wear, mass marketing of fashions began a boom. Magazines saw to it that the masses were informed of the latest styles, and as a result, models became celebrities. They were the new icons of beauty.
One of the greatest new looks in beauty was the Parisian 'Doe Eye.' This look made eyes the focus, and was considered to be as new & exciting as lipstick was in the 1920s.
Doe-Eye How To's
To get this 'winged' look for your eyes, just follow the steps below.
Step One: Using a light shadow in brown or grey, shadow the lids lightly from lashes to brows.
Step Two: A darker shade is applied to the crease, and blended up & out toward temples.
Step Three: Using a black liner, line the top eyelid from the innermost corner to the outer corner. This is done in one straight, unbroken line. As your reach the outer corner, fan upwards & out toward the temple. Lightly line the lower lashes from the outer 1/4 to meet the line on the upper corner. Keep the liner as close to the base of your lashes (tip & bottom) as possible.
Step Four: Softly blend the liner. (Softly, not a heavy smudged look!)
Last Step: Finish with several coats of mascara. We have some tips on applying mascara here.
 A Variation
A variation on the doe-eye look, is the cat eye. The application changes are few, but do give quite a different look.
Tip One: Use the black liner all around the eye, still staying as close to the lash line as you can.
Tip Two: Concentrate the mascara at the outer edges of the eyes.
Note: This look is also known as the 'Bohemian' look of the 50's, and was often worn with pale lipstick, further emphasising the eyes.
