Vixen's Favorite Girly-Night Flicks Being single, my New Year's celebrations are usually with friends, and most years we opt to stay in & avoid the drunken danger that is 'single men with alcohol.'
Drunk men are bad enough, but those who seem to be without dates on New Year's Eve, seem to be conflicted about their status and the desire to get laid is only surpassed by their unwillingness to be considerate. (A note to men, spitting on a girl is not the way to get her to go home with you...)
Anyway, we girls stay home, and generally we watch videos all night. Over the years I have perfected a list of my favorite films for women to watch, and my possy (nope, there is no 'u' in that word!) agrees.
These are my top picks for any girl gatherings (in no particular order):
Opposite Of Sex One of the best damn films of all time, it showcases not only a beautiful Christina Ricci, but a down right hysterical Lisa Kudrow (way funnier than any 'Friends' episode!). Lyle Lovett does a great job of keeping a stright face, and even if the guy is not the most handsome thing to walk this planet with a penis, you can't help but find his loyalty a turn on.
I don't want to ruin this film for those of you who have not seen it, so I won't cover the plot much, but suffice it to say that this movie is as much fun to watch as it is to dish over afterwards.
If you wonder how a so-called 'black comedy' can make you cry, giggle and wonder all at the same time, you must have missed this flick. All I can say is buy it, it is one to keep. Really. You can also Buy It At Amazon.
Chasing Amy Joey Lauren Adams plays Amy to such perfection! Would that most female leads get to be as complex (ie: real) and sound off with the real truths of the movie (ok, the gay black guy get his licks in -- well, not those kind on film anyway, but he says some cool truths too).
This film even silences most folks who hate Silent Bob & Jay (though those people are just wrong!), as it really hits home on issues of sexual orientation & relationships (including friendships). Mandatory (wo-mandatory) viewing! Buy It At Amazon.
Boys On The Side Whoopi Goldberg, Mary-Louise Parker, and Drew Barrymore travel across state lines, social boundaries & through personal histories to heal themselves & each other. (I told you these were chick flicks!).
This may sound trite, but beteewn Whoopi's wisdom (I can't gush enough about Whoopi, I love her!), Drew's breasts (OK, I love them too!) and Parker's vulenerable performance (really, this ought to have won an award nomination at least!) this film surpasses any back-of-the-box hype. If you have not seen it, I wonder why & then ask you to march your fanny to your local video store -- then let me know how many times you pass that film on as a 'must see' to your friends. Buy It At Amazon.
Thelma & Louise Yeah, I know, you expected this much from Vixen. But really, even if we all know the story, and a few of us even take turns saying the lines, this really is a classic. I can't tell you how many nights I have stayed up talking with my friends about Susan Sarandon's Louise, and how things should have been for her...
Sure, Gina's Thelma gets to live it up at the end, but I think the greater sorrow is what Louise never get's to do... Yuck it up in the film, talk it up after -- just be sure to have plenty of wine, tissue & time for this movie. Get the Special Edition at Amazon!
The Handmaid's Tale Sure, the book is better than the film, but I did see the film first & this is a movie review, so let's stick to the film...
Natasha Richardson plays a fertile woman caught & used as a "surrogate mother" for one of the rich barren couples of this future-istic sci-fi flick. I say "surrogate mother" as there is so much ritual & creepiness involved, it goes beyond the means necessary to conceive a child. Icky, icky. But again, a worthy flick for females, and if it leads you to read the book, so much the better. Buy the DVD at Amazon.
Camille Claudel I can't take credit for 'finding' this film, that goes to Gracie.
As Gracie told me, this is one film that no matter how many times you see it, it rips you wide open each time...
Isabelle Adjani plays the lead, Camille, who is gifted with real talent, that surpasses that of master sculptor Auguste Rodin (played by Gérard Depardieu). Even more painful than the curse of being female in a time when women's options were limited, is her misfortune in love. This movie explores more than an artist, more than a slice of time, but a real look at souls. Adjani looks 'more luminous than any form of art' says Gracie 'and yet even her beauty cannot stop the ugliness of this film.' (Yeah, that made me rent it too *smile*.)
If your friends cannot sit through a French movie with sub-titles, then don't waste the experience on them, and save it for a night alone. Buy It At Amazon
Fisher King Robin Williams, like Whoopi, is even more superb in his dramatic roles, and the Fisher King is one of the finest examples.
There are a few comedic moments, but this film is more about souls. Jeff Bridges, Mercedes Ruehl, & Amanda Plummer give all in this film (only Ruehl wins an Oscar) that reminds us that men can grow too.
(OK, and there is some romance stuff too.) Buy The Fisher King at Amazon.
Forever Lulu This one is a surprise find! I am not a Melanie Griffith fan, nor Patrick Swayze either, but Merideth begged me to watch this one, and I am glad I relented.
I can't fully describe the film's effects on me, and that stinks for you, cuz you want a review *giggle*, but this movie defies the odds. It moves past my former opinions of the cast, and Griffith's role seems suitable in places for someone like Goldie Hawn, but I think I have to be honest & say that something in Melanie's eyes makes this whole film real for me.
Despite the film's billing as a screw-ball comedy, this film has more meaning than that (that term should be reserved for films by Rob Schneider .) Don't read too much into the box description, trust Merideth & I, will ya? Rent it, and I bet you'll be like me & buy it. (Also called Along for the Ride.)
Breakfast At Tiffany's Maybe you've seen this a thousand times, but that's why it is a classic! Even if you think you are bored with it, try watching it picturing Marilyn in the Holly Golightly role -- she was briefly considered for it, and frankly, it would not have been the same... But would that make it better or worse? Watch it, discuss, and if you want, send in your essays *wink*. Buy It At Amazon
What Dreams May Come One of the most beautifully crafted films, the art becomes real, and even the evil is beautiful as it comes to life.
Robin Williams is willing to risk his soul to save his wife. Now that is love. Annabella Sciorra does an excellent job of being both worthy & unworthy of that love -- a clever blance that gives the film enough edge to be uncomfortable. Kinda needed in such a lush film. Buy What Dreams May Come at Amazon.
Girl, Interrupted More Whoopi, but Angelina Jolie wins the Oscar, and even Winona Ryder looks like second fiddle in this great story about changing who you are in the midst of chaos. Some argue the chaos is in the minds, some say it is the environments of families, still others say it is the oppression of the times. At the risk of being too flip, no matter what you think, it is still one fine flick! Buy It At Amazon.
Desperately Seeking Susan Yup, I love this one! Maybe you just have to be old enough to like this 80s bit of fluff, but what can I say? The clothes, the music, the attitude: Madonna at her best! Buy It At Amazon.
