A lady's purse is not merely decorative, it is functional.

No, this is not an invitation for men to mock, nor for them to ask us to hold their keys, wallets, cell phones, pagers, etc., this is an educational article. (Yes, we do that here from time to time!)

A lady's purse holds items for survival. It just so happens, since we are responsible for many things, we are often left, well, 'holding the bag.'

And, this bag is full of stuff we need.

Now, each of us women has a unique set of circumstances & responsibilities. So, I can't make a complete list of what each woman carries, however, I will go on the record and name three basics for survivial, that must be in your purse.

#1 Communication Tools These might be as expensive as a cell phone, or as simple as some change for a pay phone (remember what Mom always said!). No matter what you use, don't be caught without a means of communicating. Things happen, and you need to reach out & grab some help. (Note, carrier pidgeons & materials for smoke signals are not recommended!)

#2 Escape Tools These may be related to #1 in many situations, such as calling to get a ride, but there are more of them. There are many situations that require 'escape' ~ and fast. So, if you have a vehicle, the keys are necessary. If you don't drive, or didn't that evening, be sure to have a method of payment for a taxi, tow, or bribe for a friend to come rescue you. Keys, even for those without a car are a good idea; you'll need them to get in your home *wink* and they are excellent protection if approached in a parking lot etc. (I always carry mine with keys splayed between my finger tips, just in case...)

Don't over-look your 'papers' as escape tools: your id, your restraining orders etc., any documents that prove who you are, and that you have rights. Sounds dumb, but I can't tell you the times I have been stick with a friend who didn't bring them along, and even though we were known at the bar to get in, it was hell when the police arrived (for an incident that was *not* related to ourselves, but we had to 'be there' in the middle of it anyway...).

#3 Companion Tools These are tools that work on companions, old or new. My basic companion tool is a tube of red lipstick. Used properly, it has helped me with situations covered in #1 & #2 ~ You might be surprised to know that a cabbie will let you skip the $5 meter charge if you have soulful eyes & lush red lips! (It did not however get my pal out of the no id situation with the police that evening, its powers are limited *wink*)

A simple companion tool, in the shade of your choice, can help you when you need the change for the phone, a dollar for the juke box, or when you are 'short' the amount ($25) to buy a round...

This tool is also great for those over-looked job opportunities... You never know who you'll run into, and a quick coat of paint can make you feel more presentable, allowing you to make a better impression.

But wait, there's more!

Much like those products advertised on tv, companion tools can do so much more than those 'man-ipulative' suggestions above.

Companion tools can be used in a jiffy to give (or take) a phone number ~ much more discreet than asking loudly for a pen *wink* and much more of an 'incentive' to call. (Because a note in red lipstick is much more memorable to read the next morning, and because you know, if you were willing to risk ruin to your tool, it must be a worthy number indeed!)

You can even use companion tools with traditional methods, for more impact. Such as after providing your digits, you can leave a lip imprint on the note, for a signature. *wink*

Like many tools, companion tools can also be used for evil... They are only as 'pure' as those that use them...

I have used my tool for a number of 'bad' things.

I have written more than my phone number with my red lippie. I have written not-so-nice messages on car windshields, on bathroom mirrors, and the like. Use your imagination, and the tool can go far.

Some of my friends have different companion tools. For one, it is a pinky-shade of lip gloss, which she can use, in a pinch, to create her whole face ~ eyes, cheeks, lips! (Poor for writing, but still most effective in the other departments!) Another uses nail polish ~ more permanent, fixes runs in her hose, and I have seen her use it to give bouncers back rubs (for extra pressure on large necks *giggle)!

Companion tools can help you in ways you never dreamed possible! So it is very important to select the right one, but most importantly, it must be put in the bag, with the other tools.

Purse Tools, don't leave home without them!

There would be a #4, but if you read this, I am sure you know what I mean!
