Libby sez Libby gives her honest, 'unaltered' opinion on plastic surgery. This subject has been itching my nerves for quite awhile now, so I felt it was probably time to spew forth my opinion on this topic. I hate plastic surgery. I have never been able to understand why people would willingly go under the knife for cosmetic purposes unless they'd been disfigured in an accident or fire. I can accept the fact that we live in an appearance based society, I can accept the fact that celebrities and high-profile people need to look good all the time, but I cannot accept the fact that these people announce their surgeries like they're something to be proud of. Are they proud of the fact that they're insecure about their looks and feel a need to drastically change them?
In a recent People magazine, comedienne Kathy Griffin displays her recent plastic surgeries in detail to the public. She admits that she had a potentially fatal liposuction surgery in 1999, but went ahead again and had more lipo in her arms, thighs, and waist this year and still can't see the results. She also had a nose job that actually appears to have made her nose look worse and a procedure called "Japanese hair straightening" because she was too lazy to blow dry her hair straight each morning. As a naturally straight-haired person, all I can ask is...Why? The saddest thing about Griffin's display is that she looks better in her "before" picture than in her "after" one.
Demi Moore also recently had thousands of dollars of plastic surgery, but I don't think I'm the only one who thinks she looks positively awful and phony looking. Sure, she's scored Ashton, but much like Cher, her face is now frozen in the same damn expression all the time. I mean, these women may have flawless skin, but if your face looks like a mask covered in Saran Wrap, is it worth it?
When you come across someone in the "real" world who's had a lot of plastic surgery, it is immediately apparent and fake looking, which, to me, defeats the purpose of it. Why would you have all that work done just to look phony and scary looking? The fake boob phenomenon also applies here. By now, most of us are so used to looking at the abundance of balloon-breasted beauties forced upon us day after day, but I can never get over of how, well, fake boob jobs look. Not only are these things dangerous and ridiculous looking, but whenever I see a pair I just want to take a big pin and pop 'em. Yet women still save their pennies and take out payment plans to have foreign bodies inserted into their chests that will eventually need to be replaced if they don't explode inside them first.
In my hardcore feminist days, I used to feel shallow for wearing makeup and dyeing my hair, but makeup can be washed off and hair can by re-colored, but surgery is permanent. When a doctor messes up, you're messed up and you can rarely get your old face back once the damage is done. A friend of mine who had lipo done recently was leaking and in pain for weeks that she needed to be hospitalized. Unfortunately, she was so heavy that the results were so minimal. The dominatrix who trained me had a boob job in the seventies before it was fashionable and now had lupus as a result of the silicone leaking into her system. These results aren't pretty and there's many more where they came from.
I admit I could benefit from a nose job and maybe a little lipo, but I've learned to accept my looks and deal with them. I can't say I'm always happy when I look in the mirror, but I would never go to the extent of having surgery to change my appearance. I wish more women would think this way and stop worrying about their crow's feet, cup size, or wrinkles. It's part of the aging process and if you don't like it, make sure you put that SPF 30 on before you bake in the sun. And stop thinking that bigger boobs will get you a better boyfriend. If anything, they'll attract you a bigger asshole. Learn to accept your outward appearance and focus on what's really important...your inside.
