If he would have stopped writing after 3 books, we would have a nice sex fantasy trilogy.

Fantasy for a Lifestyle

Gor is a counter Earth, directly opposite Earth, unseeable because of the sun and it circles the sun in exactly the same orbit. And that’s where the similarities end.

The basic formula of John Norman’s Gorean saga boils down to: 1) an Earth woman is kidnapped from her life on Earth and is transported to Gor; 2) she is made a slave; and 3) she comes to love her life as a slave and never wants to return to Earth.

First Gor BookThere are two classes of people on Gor: masters and slaves. There are a few free women who are cloistered and kept from the public eye. Then there are the slaves. Their soul purpose in life is to please in any way the Master chooses. Goreans have a belief that the natural order is for men to dominate women. Goreans believe all women have a slave nature just waiting to be brought out by the right man. Through her slavery, a girl (no slaves are women) can feel the extremes of sexuality and only with a strong Master can she be free to have those feelings. She doesn’t have to fear loss of control because she never had it in the first place. There is another class, the Panther Women. These are the women who have run away from slavery. The irony in the novels is that deep within, both free women and Panther Women would prefer to be slaves.

If John Norman had stopped with the first three books, we would have a nice trilogy of erotic fantasy novels. Arius of Treve has written what could pass for an analytical study of the novels. And if Norman had not gone on to pound the philosophy of Gor into the ground, it would be valid. But he went on to write 27 of those books. It is not the social commentary that has drawn so many men (and women) to the novels. It’s the sex and social structure advocated by the books. (Un)fortunately, I made it through 2 ½ of them. And then I got bored.

Entire groups have modeled their lives on the Gorean novels. I know one woman who was so completely into the Gorean lifestyle that she had kajira (slave) as her license plates.

One or two or the books are worth a read for diversion. As a lifestyle, I’ll be a Panther Woman.
