Memoirs of a Geisha : A Novel A glimpse into an exotic world. Memoirs of a Geisha a novel by Arthur Golden.
Arthur Golden has set the stage for this novel by having Sayuri, a geisha, relate her memoirs to an historian. Starting in 1936 and going through the 1990s the novel not only gives insight not only into Japanese society but the exotic world of the high class geisha. We follow Sayuri from her introduction in to the first house through her rise as consort to high ranking officials both before and after WWII.
I liked the book very much. There is a gentleness to it and a reserve that we associate with Geisha. It took me into a world that was always remote from Western society. Without becoming bogged down in details of dress, makeup, decorum, these were all expressed in the action of the book. For me it was an exploration into another culture and a look at one class of women in that world. I highly recommend the book for a nice, leisurely read. Quoting from the book cover, it is romantic, erotic, suspenseful and completely unforgettable.
