It's Better Than Candy It's more than just hearts and flowers.... For some, Valentine's Day is just another day of the year. For others, it's a day of hearts, romance, candy and flowers. Some think it's just another way that proprietors can make money, and rid our wallets of it. But for me, Valentine's Day has a deeper meaning.
When my husband asked me to marry him, back in 1984, I remember eagerly saying, "YES!" We were in Nebraska at the time, as I was being introduced to his mother and family as his new bride to be. Since he was previously married and divorced and I had already had a child, we didn't want the whole shebang kind of wedding. We wanted something small, simple and quick. We knew the church route was not the answer, so we went to the local courthouse and began asking questions. First things first, we needed to apply for a marriage license and get blood tests. Once that was finished, come back, pay your $45.00 and pick a day.
Since we did all this running around on the Thursday and Friday, the only next available day was the following Monday. Which just happened to be, you guessed it, Valentine's Day. I can remember both of us looking at each other, laughing hysterically and rolling our eyes. Us? Married on Valentine's Day? It just seemed too cheesy. So that's why we did it. I recall friends and family making jokes, telling us how we'd never forget the day..how we'd always know how many years we've been married. and that we could kill two birds with one stone, by only having to buy one gift that would cover both our anniversary and Valentine's Day.
Of course, we vowed never-ever to do that, and I can honestly say we never did. For us, this day was not about hearts, romance, candy or flowers. It's not about gifts. It's about our love and feelings for each other. Every Valentine's/Anniversary Day, hubby and I sit down and look back on all the years we've been together. To us, it seems like yesterday. We look back at all the things we've done and been through together..and tell each other we'd do it all over again. With me and hubby, it's more than just love. It's a knowing feeling we both have. A knowing in our mind, body and soul, that we can count on each other for anything. No matter what curve life throws us, we always battle it together. And that my friends, has been our special gift to each other for 21 years. Happy Valentine's Day...with love. ~Kat
