Entertained by Plastic As a girl, I had 5 Barbie dolls, but only one Ken. I understood that something was wrong with this scenario, but I didn't really think much of it unless I was playing with my friends - all boys - around the neighborhood. Of course, they would argue endlessly about who would be the Ken, and the boys that didn’t win, went home. This is probably why I preferred playing with my friends one-on-one, instead of in a large group. I could always convince a boy by himself to play dolls with me, and maybe even be a Barbie instead of the coveted Ken.
When I wasn’t playing doctor with the boys, I was begging my Mom to play Barbie with me. And even though my Mom had a great imagination, she never seemed that interested in playing dolls with me. So, at the age of seven, I was pretty excited for the birth of my new baby sister. I mean I had to wait a couple years, but after that she was my doll playing slave. Finally, someone that actually wanted to be a Barbie and no convincing needed!
It took me years to get over Barbie, I enjoyed dressing her in evening gowns till I was fifteen. I had an excuse though, since my sister was eight, and I was doing my duty as Big Sister.
Barbie fascinated me; she could be everything that I wanted to be – an acrobat, rock star and even a fairy – with just a few wardrobe changes. She could even drive, something that I still can’t do at the age of twenty-three.
I finally outgrew her though, overloaded with the high school duty of growing bigger breasts to attract the perfect Rocker Ken. But I knew that I could never achieve Barbie status, I just wasn’t that popular or blonde. Instead, I became happy with my 36C’s and found the perfect Ken or at least a reasonable facsimile or at least that’s what I tell him.
