The Single Mother's Guide to Dating Well Without Parenting Poorly, By Ellie Slott Fisher ADeadHeart Reviews 'The Single Mother's Guide to Dating Well Without Parenting Poorly' Not so long ago, I was bitching and ranting and raving (my general behavior) about the lack of books out there for real single women…
You know – single women like me. The single Mom’s without a lot of money, without a nanny, without 400 dollar fucking shoes.
Real women, normal women (not to say I am normal but you get the idea) who wear New Balance sneakers and think they are stylin’. Women who have eaten Ramen Noodles because they HAD to – not because it was a fad. Real women who don’t have money for glow-in-the-dark pink drinks – but feel just decadent when choosing an apple martini over a bottle of Bud Light.
So my mom and I went Amazon.com searching and stumbled upon Ellie Slott Fisher’s new book, Mom, There’s a Man in the Kitchen and He’s Wearing Your Robe – The Single Mother’s Guide to Dating Well Without Parenting Poorly.
Eureka!
I began to read to reviews – and to read up a bit on Ms. Fisher. And there – buried amid shining accolades - was the information I sought:
Formerly a reporter and editor for the United Press International, Ellie Slott Fisher was an editor of a trade magazine and mother of two young children when her husband of 15 years suddenly died of a rare genetic heart arrhythmia. She began dating again, got married, and later divorced.
It was a perfect match – an author who would understand all kinds of relationship grief as well as the joys and pains of Dating, With Children. And I didn’t see one, not one, mention of Manolo Blahniks. The book was ordered and I impatiently awaited its arrival.
Amazon could not have been fast enough – I ripped open the box, popped all of the unnecessary bubble wrap, and dove in.
Yes! Here it was – the definitive guide to mothering and dating simultaneously. Ms. Fisher has a tongue in cheek, friendly way of telling single mom’s that it’s ok to date, ok not to date, ok to feel confused and paranoid. And, most importantly, that while dating, or even having a serious relationship may not seem like the best thing to do for your kids, (especially if your kids are, well, kids about it) that in the long run, a happy mom is a better mom.
Refreshingly honest and brilliantly real…as one reader put it, Man in the Kitchen is ”A cross between Sex in the City and Good Housekeeping.”
A definite must read from the Desk of ADeadHeart.
