SK Q&A Libby tries to get a 16 year old to date -- no, not to date her, sheesh! I read SK and so does my Mom. I'm almost 16 and
she
won't let me date anyone. I know this really cute guy
and he has asked me to go out. How can I get my mom
and dad to let me date him? They say I can't date
alone until I'm a junior. It's not fair. My
brother
dates. And he's only 15 months older than me.
Amber
Dear Amber,
I know it sucks to be 16 and not be able to date when all your friends are, but I'm sure your Mom is just trying to protect you. Have you tried bringing this guy over and introducing him to your parents? Sometimes it eases your parents worries a little if they actually meet the guy and see what he's like.
You may also want to try just going out with a group of your friends and inviting him along. That way you two get to hang out together and your parents won't have to worry about it being an actual "date." Your parents are just looking out for you and are probably worried you may want to start having unprotected sex, which can be problematic, obviously. Prove to them that you're responsible enough to make the right decisions and they may re-think their decisions. If they set a curfew for you, don't break it, and don't let dating interfere with your schoolwork.
