Review of Devil Doll's Queen of Pain
So I get this package in the mail…from Gracie. Everyone knows getting boxes of stuff in the mail is fun – but maybe not when it’s for work?
Anyway, included in the masses of books to be read and reviewed is a handful of CDs – all unknown and unfamiliar. The DJ in me was thrilled to have new tuneage, but the stressed out psycho could only think, “Oh Gods…it’s all gonna suck and I have to listen to it all. Sigh.”
I picked one at random after some quick sampling and took Devil Doll to the CD player in the bathroom, thinking to have a quick listen while in the shower. (Yes, there’s a mental image for you.)
In less then 5 minutes, I was blown away, reaching a dripping arm out of the shower to skip back to song one, desperate to learn it and sing along. I stayed in the water for too long, just listening to tracks 1 thru 5.
With throaty, glorious vocals and an eclectic mix of jazz, punk, swing, and lounge, with a little Latin flair thrown in for fun…Devil Doll will grab you by the throat and refuse to let go. Alternating from images of a rockin’ punk grrl with attitude and a sexy, smoke filled bar, a woman in a red dress gracing the top of a piano – you will somehow be transported into her world.
I am compelled to list my favorite lyrical snippets here…because for every woman that has ever been in love or been horribly wronged, and for those of us who just don’t give a shit…Colleen Duffy says it all for us:
From ‘It Was Raining’ -
It’s been raining since the day you left me
can’t get dry since you lied to me
Tried to drown but I just kept comin’
up for air I can’t seem to die don’t know why
and it hurts so bad I can taste you
can’t escape you
I feel you everywhere I go.
And from my favorite song, ‘King of Brooklyn’ -
I want to kiss you and then punch you in the face!
I mean, how many times have you thought that!?
Anyway, being the good publicity stunt activist that I am, I sent a few tracks into an online radio station that I listen to – and it caused chaos. Scores of listeners were suddenly new fans, DJs hounded me for more, her site was bombarded with hits from crazed Devil Doll addicts. No one could get enough of the girl with the red lips, the machine gun, the great dress…
Colleen Duffy’s sexy voice, heart (and fist) felt lyrics and great clash of musical genres will have you begging for more…
Look for an interview with Devil Doll in a few weeks, when she gets back from a short tour. And look for ADeadHeart to be rockin’ a kick ass tee-shirt almost as soon!
