The Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler The Vagina Monologues can be experienced visually or textually. Both are absolutely necessary for full appreciation of this art. The Vagina Monologues.
It's been called "a celebration of female sexuality" yet I found it to reflect more of woman than just the sexual aspect.
Hailed as the bible for a new generation of women, it has been performed in cities all across America and at hundreds of college campuses, and has inspired a dynamic grassroots movement--V-Day--to stop violence against women.
I saw Ensler's performance first on DVD. She is brilliant, of course. Compassionate, humourous, wise. But also a little disturbing. Her performance addresses women's issues on an emotional level that is just a step beyond comfortable. This, too, is necessary. It's only by making people uncomfortable that positive change takes place.
Yet I was glad to have the opportunity to experience the monologues in book format as well. I could lend my own voice to the narrative. I could listen with another part of me.
