Story #1

First, my maternal Grandmother's story. Told to me through the years, but only when the 'subject comes up' of course.

Grandma was the youngest of I believe 7 kids. Due to the conservative times, mother's didn't talk about 'that time' very much or well if they did it all. Being the youngest, I gather everyone else thought someone had told Ruthie, but no one had...

She came home bleeding that day, flung herself on the bed, assumed she was dying.

Family members found her before dinner, crying on her bed, and explained enough to get her to come down to eat. Story #2

My daughter's tale you have likely read, but there was a nuclear melt down that I didn't cover there. It occurred when I suggested she use a tampon.

She freaked.

She was so opposed to the idea, that she began to scream 'I can't do this, I wanna be a baby again!' at the top of her lungs, tears screaming down her face.

Christ, those were all I had, so I left for Walmart.

Story #3

My own mother just told me this little beauty when I informed her of my daughter's trauma.

She couldn't believe I even suggested tampons to a young girl. 'I cried for three days when I had to wear a garter belt!'

Shame on me.

But she continued:

'When you girls where in school, they counseled us and warned us not to let you use tampons.' Which leads us to...

Story #4

I remember in school being warned against the dangers of tampons as well. Likely the same gals that warned the parents, freaked my mom out, and were sexually misinformed said:

'Use of tampons is suspect because some girls enjoy them too much. It leads to problems.'

If I heard that now, I would bust out laughing. In fact, I giggle as I type, but then, it was ominous, scary & put me off trying tampons for years.

I think these 'matrons' assumed girls would be sliding tampons in & out for pleasure all day - which would have been a great way to pass the hour of gym pad-wearing-girls had to sit out during swim class, come to think of it. *giggle*

You know how sexual young girls in the 60s were feared to be. Those 'health educators' had their hands full, I tell you...

But I guess, when I look back at all these stories, I feel normal. Actually, quite sane compared to my relatives. I didn't cry or scream.

...I think I'll call my sister, and see if she did... or at least rattle her cage about her 2 year old daughter...
