As some of you know, I work as a companion/caregiver to an elderly, blind woman. One of the things she enjoys immensely is when I read to her. Lately, she has been having some down days, asking God why she is still allowed to stay on this earth. Asking what her purpose is here. She's 85, blind, has severe osteoarthritis, walks with a walker, and has congestive heart failure, so I can understand her questioning. I try to be compassionate and understanding, and tell her that I don't have the answers she seeks. She sighs... and we get on with the day, or try to.

While making her lunch one afternoon, I saw this book on the counter titled, 90 Minutes in Heaven. I read the blurb on the back and saw that it was written by an ordained minister named Don Piper and co-authored by Cecil Murphey. I am not a highly religious person, but Granny is, so I thought this book might be something to lift her spirits and maybe answer some of those unanswered questions she seeks.

Surprisingly, once I started reading this book, it was hard to put down...for BOTH of us. I seldom read anything remotely religious, but this book just seemd to strike a nerve in both of us. Maybe it was because I too, had a life changing experience...I don't know, but I will say that this book made me think. Yes, I was raised as a Catholic, but I haven't been a practicing one in years and this book has not changed that...I believe in God and heaven, but I don't believe one has to go to church to pratice His teachings... Anyway...let me tell a little more about this book...and give you a glimpse of heaven. This is Don Piper's story.

It begins with the author, Don Piper driving home from a conference. His car is crushed by a semi that crosses into his lane. Medical personnel said he died instantly. While his body lay lifeless inside the ruins of his car, he experiences the glories of heaven.

Ninety minutes after the wreck, while a minister prayed for him, Piper miraculously returned to life on earth with only the memory of inexpressible heavenly bliss. His faith in God was severely tested as he faced an uncertain and grueling recovery.

I don't want to tell you too much about this story, as I want you to READ it. It's a quick read, too, we finished it in 2 days. 90 Minutes in Heaven offers a glimpse into a very real dimension of God's reality. It encourages those recovering from serious, life threatening injuries and diseases, and those dealing with the loss of a loved one. The experience dramatically changed the author's life, and it might change yours too...or maybe, like it did for Granny, give you some answers to those unanswered questions. For those not into the religious aspects, well, all I have to say, is that it's wonderful and inspiring story that brightened our perspective, and gave us a sense of security, clarity and warmth.
