Her books on dating and love are full of practical advice on how to meet and possess a worthy mate for your very own. She sprinkles the pages with personal anecdotes from her own exciting love life as well as informative data from the latest relationship research studies.
Updating! is about trading your current (miserable, embarrassing, depressing) dating pool for better quality dates you can be proud of. Lowndes' subject matter lends itself to manipulative strategies or gold-digging ploys but she maintains integrity and honesty in her advice. To attract a better mate, you have to be a quality date.
The specific nature of dating upgrades are Looks, Wealth, Class and Honor. The most interesting chapters for me were on attracting a better looking mate and snagging one with wealth. I found Class and Honor to be attributes I can do without. The hoops you must jump through to catch a high-class mate would drive me to bloody homicide. And I probably fall short of the sparkling reputation required to obtain a truly Honorable partner.
But I found the tips in the other chapters very insightful. For instance, beautiful people don't respond to compliments in the same way that average-looking people do. A beautiful person has probably been beautiful all his life. He knows he looks good. When you compliment him on his looks, he's heard it before. He wants to be appreciated for his other qualities, and he wants your admiration for him to grow as you get to know him. He's bored by women being blown away instantly by his physical attributes. So don't compliment his eyes or his ass, or make a big deal of how hot you think he is. Show your interest by making eye contact, talking and getting to know him. Then mildly compliment something he's done or some element of his personality.
