For Women: More Monologues They Haven't Heard Thirty More Powerful Contemporary Scene-Study Pieces by Susan Pomerance These are scene-study pieces. Little one-sided pieces of the drama we might find in any woman's life. From the typical (boyfriend breakup) to the horrifying (discovering your husband has been molesting your daughter), this collection runs us through our emotional paces.
Most of the monologues are intriguing, but all are remarkably bleak. Taken as a whole, they're really quite depressing. For the sake of balance, I might have enjoyed finding a more upbeat piece among them. Something to express Positive Female Drama.
Each monologue is short, about a page of text representing a scene in which a woman carries on dialogue with herself or someone else. The scene is meant to be visualized or performed, and a few stage directions are given. Unfortunately, it's impossible to bring forth a truly compelling voice or character in a single page monologue, so each piece leaves me feeling unsatisfied. Having only a brief shell of insight into each woman makes them all sound rather the same. Though they each have a name, it's like the same woman reflecting on twenty different emotional issues.
It's a short read and definitely worth the time. Each monologue is the perfect size for a quick read in the grocery line or while waiting for your gas tank to fill.
