"World's BIGGEST little burlesque magazine!" Shimmy Magazine is a charming little publication which dotes on burlesque in its many facets and incarnations. Shimmy is "the brainchild of two women who met knocking the crap out of eachother on the roller derby track." Apparently at some point the two discussed a fondness for the tease-and-please sexuality of burlesque as well as the angry fuck-me-sex of roller derby (proving that women are able to like it all!). So, they set out to create a saucy little publication dedicated to the world of burlesque (from historical to neo-burlesque and all stops around it) as well as vaudeville, cabaret, and sideshow performers.
The magazine has articles and interviews which profile performers of today and yesterday, covers burlesque news and events, as well as spotlights products of interest to performers and fans alike.
Since burlesque and sex kittens go together like vodka and lemonade, there are some familiar faces (and pasties) on and between the covers, such as Kitten on the Keys -- and surprise, surprise, they dish with our very own Satan's Angel (who has her own boudoir here too)! Since burlesque today is largely a revival of, by and for women, the performers you will meet in Shimmy are as varied as the types of beauty you'd expect to see in the female form. Yes, this means you will see curves. You will also hear the voices of the women themselves: Flirty, feminist, fiesty, and even downright outrageous. Like burlesque itself, the publication is both glorious to look at and wildly entertaining.
Pint-sized, only 5.25 x 4.25 inches, this publication delivers quite a punch. Saucy humor sashays with pomp and circumstance making it both an informative and cheeky read, yet when it comes to publication qualities such as how it's printed and bound, Shimmy can only be described as glamorous. Stylish, full of color, printed on heavy paper --even the ads are graphic delights -- this is one slick mini-mag.
Ahh, it's good to be alive, a woman and reading Shimmy.
Shimmy is $5 per copy plus S/H, and can be ordered here. Get issues one and two, before they are gone (sure to be collectible) and subscribe so you don't miss future issues!
