The Thorn Boy and Other Dreams of Dark Desire I've dreamed of the sensuous, secret-shrouded lands of antiquity, where the nights are filled with perfume and the tantalizing slither of silk against skin. In these places, the incubi and the succubae of the imagination wake up and walk. This book can be seen as a travelogue of the exotic landscape of the imagined realm. Traveler's tales. – Storm Constantine The Thorn Boy and Other Dreams of Dark Desire by Storm Constantine is a lavish collection of nine darkly fantastic tales. Storm Constantine has a way of weaving magic into her stories. She can create new worlds and other realms full of amazing and complete characters. Her work is truly enchanting. I was captivated by the lush detail.
“The Face of Sekt” was my favorite story. It involves a Goddess loosely based on the Egyptian cat goddess Bast. Being the sex-kitten that I am, the feline nature of this goddess captured me. Her awakening to her true nature was wonderful and metaphorically I think it is something every woman goes through at some point in her life.
“The Island of Desire” was my second favorite story. It was loosely based upon the fairy tales “The Twelve Dancing Princesses” and “Kate Crackernuts” (which I have never heard of even though I love old fairy tales). The new spin on the old style fairy tales was interesting and enjoyable.
Another story I found very interesting was “My Lady of the Hearth”. This guy was really into sex-kittens, quite literally. A man prayed to the Bast like goddess, Pu-ryah – Queen of Cats - to turn his little feline friend into his wife. So the goddess grants his wish and turns his cat into a woman, well almost. She’s still a cat, but in a woman’s body. Things don’t turn out like the man had hoped. Erotic and a little odd, this combination of feminine and feline goes a little too far and becomes too literal. I am a cat lover, but not like that. “My Lady of the Hearth” is the epitome of the old saying ‘be careful what you wish for’.
The other stories- some previously published, some not- are all full of rich detail and wondrous worlds. If you are looking for something out of the ordinary to read, this is a good pick.
