In many ways I was a late bloomer, so perhaps this is more 'you' in your teen years. But I still feel strongly enough about it to leave my point stand: Sex in the 1920's was for the nation what sex in my 20's was like for me.

Here's my short list of commonalities between the 1920's and my flapper years.

We wore shorter skirts: At 20, mom & dad had less input into my apparel choices (and it was the 80's, so the skirts were small even if the hair was BIG).

The best drinking spots were also secret and illicit meeting spots: Drinking and dancing were sins which lead to other sins which required privacy and endurance.

We had sex in cars: None of my friends had their own apartments, let alone the poor beggars I dated.

And if sex was a let down, well, there was still the moving pictures...

Video was as huge as the 'talkies' and just as lucrative a lure for those who wanted to 'run away' and be a star ~ only instead of Hollywood & the walk of fame, it was porn and cocaine. But society warned us of the dangers of human trafficking just the same as they had before.

We managed to live our lives anyway.

We were allowed the privilege of voting: For the first time, I didn't tune out when conversations turned to politics at the local level; I needed to learn all I could so I could vote correctly. If men in the 1920s resented women's right to vote, men then seemed to think it was 'cute' that I would try to talk politics, economics and foreign policy.

We wondered what sort of impact our vote made: Not just on the individual level, but as a group of women... If 'we' were all voting, why were things such a mess?

We wondered what came next: Suffrage, like my high school years, was over, but now what? Wife, mother, and death? What once seemed possible, the Future with a capital 'F' was now looming and it was full of dread... almost like a Great Depression...

And when those years came (our 30's) we found strength we didn't know we had, and we made it through tougher for it. But meanwhile, we partied and were 'decadent youth'.
