A Cut Above - The Long And Short of "It"

If not answers, I at least deserve a nod for avoiding the obligatory "I have a dream that one day this penis will rise up..." joke.

First things first: I am not typically a sexually insecure woman. In general, I know how to work it. Recently, however, I feel that as an American, I may be at a cultural disadvantage. Consider the following conversation I had with a 'special' male friend of mine. (Our getting together is inevitable, but hasn't happened yet.) He's from a culture where circumcision isn't only not the norm; it's practically unheard-of. It's becoming less and less common in America to have one's son circumcised at birth as well; a practice which has been common for several generations. I'm sure I don't have the figures exactly correct, but I remember reading that in America in 1980, almost 90% of male newborns got snipped. As of 2000, it's down to about 58%. Perhaps girls twenty years from now won't be in my predicament. Needless to say, this conversation surprised me.

Me: Did you read in the news the other day about the couple arguing about circumcising their eight-year old son?

Him: No, but that's disgusting, why would they do that?

Me: I guess it's become a medical issue for him and is "necessary", and the wife wants to have it done. The husband is threatening to sue her, because he believes it's akin to child abuse to put a child through that at the age of eight.

Him: It certainly is, but if it's a medical issue, that might be different.

Me: I just don't think it's a big deal. Practically everyone is circumcized anyway.

Him: That isn't true; are you crazy? I don't know a single man who is circumcized, including myself. I don't think I've even seen a penis in real-life that is circumcized. Isn't it kind of an outdated practice? I thought that only Jewish people did that, or guys on a dare, maybe. That's sick.

So I started thinking about my experience as a Gen-Xer in America, although I hate to label generations. I, in my experience, have never actually seen a "penis in real-life" that WASN'T circumcized. Perhaps it's the guys I've dated or luck of the draw, but when you consider that nine out of ten American guys in my age group were cut at birth, perhaps it's not so surprising that I've only run into guys in that ninety percent.

Here's why I'm a dork, and also probably the part where I relegate my 'vixen' status and reveal myself as less a sex kitten than, well…more just a kitten. If I weren't fully planning on eventually getting naked with this guy, this would have passed my radar as simply an item of mild interest. The fact that I AM planning on getting naked with this guy sent me into a full-on panic. Or if not panic, at least I found this far more than just mildly interesting. I'm not naïve; I do know how an au natural man looks, and how things work, in general. The adult in me isn't nervous. A penis is a penis is a penis, right?

The girlish, immature part of me is wondering how I should, quite literally, handle this. Does one touch an uncut man differently than a cut one? How do the mechanics of oral sex work on an uncut man? Do I have to be more careful about hurting him, as he has more nerve endings than a circumcized man? The teenaged girl inside me is thinking "Wait…do I have to re-learn how to give a hand job? Or a blow job? Jeeezus!" Of course, though, this particular man is worth it, turtleneck or no.

As long as I'm already exposing myself, though - ladies, do you have a preference either way regarding foreskin? Are things, *ahem*, handled differently? Any tips? (pun intended.) Gentlemen, feel free to chime in on this as well. Deep down, I know that this is not quite the earth-shattering conundrum that I'm making it out to be in my overly analytical little brain, but tell me - are all penises indeed created equal? If not answers, I at least deserve a nod for avoiding the obligatory "I have a dream that one day this penis will rise up..." joke.
