Treasures in Heaven Kathleen Alcala's book is vivid and inspiring. Dipped in luscious Mexican culture that melts on the reader's tongue like chocolate, the imagery in this is quite beautiful and the prose often poetic, even tastefully erotic. The story, however, starts out slow and pretty much maintains the pace.
Set in 19th century Mexico City, a woman Estela escapes after scandal forces her husband into exile. Mexico is harsh to a woman alone, she learns. With La Senorita, an independent and richly-drawn character, Estela starts a movement for social change that proves to be quite dangerous. This book is elegant and empowering in its message, that one must not meekly await treasures in Heaven but must create treasure here on Earth in the form of change.
