After the shower for the new bride put on by the “girls” at the senior center, Mary and Jenny had taken Isabel out for lunch. As they were finishing lunch at the local Olive Garden, Isabel was going on about Robert…

“Mother!” reprimanded Mary horrified.

“Cool,” said Jennie, smiling.

Mary turned on Jennie, “And you approve of this…this behavior?”

Jennie patted her mother’s hand and turned to Isabel. “Just remember, Gran, you need to be safe.”

“Oh, don’t worry about that, Dear. We take precautions. We have been having speakers about safe sex at the center.”

Is this far-fetched? Hardly. With more and more of our parents living longer and longer, they are re-marrying and, let’s face it, having sex.

Just because “Gran” is receiving Social Security checks doesn’t mean that the physical side of her relationships has ended. In fact, there is a lot more going on in those senior centers than daughters would like to think. Just because we suddenly become “old” doesn’t mean we suddenly become a nun. In fact, there is more of a freedom as we age than anyone thought.

Most of us just don’t want to face the fact our parents are sexual beings. To contemplate our grandparents in a physical relationship is frightening. Oh, they may not have the mad, wild sex they had at 25, but they do have satisfying relationships. There is not the rush to couple; it is more relaxed. And, as we age, not as often.

not from ecstasy
but the morning rising
the daily greeting to the sun
after a night
laced with erotic
pain and pleasure
where arthritic hips
rose once more to the rhythm
of wanting
and arms embraced
the lover’s need

only a day or two
and I shall once again
moisten to the prospect
and be ready for the dance

I expect to be a sex-kitten at 75.
