Special Care For Your Breasts

Breast Care Stop Chanting "We Must, We Must, We Must Increase Our Bust!" and get the facts.

No matter your breast size, we all can agree that sexy breasts are firm with soft skin.

The secrets to beautiful breasts involve care, some products, and lots of attitude, so you can say, the appeal of your breasts really does lie in your own hands! *wink*

Let's first look at Basic Facts:

Breasts themselves do not contain any muscle, they are held in place by a layer of skin. Underneath the breasts there is fibrous tissue and muscle separating them from the ribs. (While there is no actual muscle in the breast, the pectoral muscle passes underneath the breast and connects the chest and the arm.)

So, it is the skin that ensures the firmness & shape of your bust line.

The area of skin from the base of the breasts up to the chin is the most important factor in maintaining beautiful breasts. This is the area we mean when we refer to 'skin' in this article.

Pointers On Your Finer Points: Years ago, I worked for a lady who had a rather good joke about the bras she wore in the 50s. She called them 'bird dog bras' because 'they made pointers our of setters.' *giggle*

And a good bra is still a good idea: It helps the skin not to lose its elasticity.

Choose a bra that fits well. Any woman who has spent hours in a fitting room will tell you how each bra maker has different ideas of what a 32 B is, making bra shopping a literal nightmare. First you find one that fits, but you want to be sure it washes & wears well, so you only buy one... You go back to buy more, and they no longer make it!

But ladies, it has to be done.

Here's a quick check list for bra shopping:

#1 It should not cut into your shoulders or leave a mark under your breasts.

#2 Padded cups should only be used occasionally, they don't allow the skin to breath (more on that below).

#3 The center of the bra should lie flat against your breastbone ~ There should be no gap.

#4 Check that the bra cups are smooth with no wrinkles.

#5 Check in a mirror to see if the back of the bra hikes up. If it does, then the bra doesn't fit correctly. (The back of the bra should rest comfortably against the middle of your back.)

Wearing Bras Bras should be worn daily, to help keep the skin firm. And always during exercise, sports etc. to avoid the extra pulling on the skin that movement creates. (You needn't worry about swimming however, as the water will create the support!) It is also recommended to wear a bra while pregnant and breast-feeding.

It is rumored that Marilyn & other glamour girls wore bras to bed to keep their busts in great shape. This may or may not be true, however, most folks will say that the skin on the bust needs time to breath, just like the skin elsewhere on your body. If you insist on wearing a bra to sleep in, be sure it is cotton or a breathable fabric and that you pay close attention to the other tips below.

Breast Skin Care Like the rest of your skin, you can experience break-outs, large pores and other skin imperfections. While we will not address medical problems, here are some basic tips for general care of the skin on your breasts:

Keep your skin cleansed with gently cleansers. Use small, circular motions to apply cleansers, washes etc. Most any cleanser will do, but avoid harsh 'soaps' as they will dry & age the skin on your bust, just as with your face.

Exfoliate gently, to keep pores clean. You can use an exfoliating product or a wet wash cloth while showering/bathing. (I'd advise against those 'poofs' and use a washcloth or sponge as those poofy things make bubbles and don't really exfoliate well.)

Dry your skin gently. Think 'blot' rather than 'rub.'

Lotions for the bust help in keeping the elasticity of the breasts' skin. Plus, massaging is good for your breast health (remember, use circular movements and you can give yourself a good breast exam at the same time!).

Always use sun protection when you bring out that swimsuit! Just like your face, skin on your breasts will age quickly form the sun's rays.

Running Hot & Cold Your bust may heat things up, but in general, heat is bad for your skin.

Be it the bath/shower water or the sun, the heat makes the blood vessels dilate, slowing the circulation, and weakening the skin. (And, as already mentioned the exposure to the sun leads to premature aging of the skin.)

Cold water stimulates the blood circulation and tones the tissues, keeping the skin firm.

Harlow maintained her lovely bust line with cold water. She took cold showers, and several times daily applied cold compresses to her breasts. Though Harlow rarely wore a bra, her breasts were fab!

Take short cold showers, or end your shower with a cold 'blast.' ('Experts' suggest two minutes for small breasts, and four-five minutes for big breasts.) These showers activate the blood circulation and favor the elimination of the toxins. Little by little, they gain in firmness.

If you don't wish to take cold showers, you can either use a sponge to pour cold water on your breasts, or apply a cold wet towel to them, for a few minutes.

Attitude Works! Proud confidence is great posture which generally shows off the chest. *wink* It is also key to a better bust line.

If you sit slouched, or hunchbacked, your breasts will tend sag. This is because, little by little, the skin and the dorsal and pectoral muscles will become atrophied. So, chin up, shoulders back, and show good posture!

Three Pointers To Keep Your Two Pointers Beauty tips are nice, but health is where the real beauty lies. So here are the big threes in breast health every woman should know:

1) Remember to take care of your 'breast friends' with monthly breast checks.

Breast self-examination (BSE) should be done regularly at the same time every month. Regular BSE teaches you to know how your breasts normally feel so that you can more readily detect any change. Changes may include:

* development of a lump
* a discharge other than breast milk
* swelling of the breast
* skin irritation or dimpling
* nipple abnormalities (i.e., pain, redness, scaliness, turning inward)

If you notice any of these changes, see your healthcare provider as soon as possible for evaluation.

2) A yearly breast examination by a physician or nurse trained to evaluate breast problems -- with your pap ladies!

3) Mammograms.

A low-dose x-ray of the breasts to find changes that may occur, mammograms are the most common imaging technique. Mammography can detect cancer or other problems before a lump becomes large enough to be felt, as well as assist in the diagnosis of other breast problems. Should there be a lump a biopsy is required to confirm or deny the presence of cancer.

There is some controversy among cancer organizations regarding when to begin having mammograms, as well as how often. However, according to the American Cancer Society recommends, by age 40 women should have a screening mammogram every year. Should you be at increased risk for breast cancer check with your doctor about when you should begin having mammograms (and how often).
