I've Got Rants In My Pants

This time, Gracie addresses the question, "Should the age of consent to appear in a porn movie be raised to from 18 to 21?"

Via Spin Thicket ~ a terrific site for PR pros & media pundits I found this bit by Ezra Klein discussing the matter of the age to perform in porn. Klein's thoughts were based on those of Garance Franke-Ruta, who wrote, Age of Innocence Revisited: A lot of those girls "gone wild" are disturbingly young (in the Wall Street Journal) and Amanda Marcotte's response to Franke-Ruta.

Lordy, lordy. You know I'm going to have an opinion on this. We start this rant already in progress ~

We want to 'protect' young women. :snort:

This point of view is much more misogynistic than the porn industry is. We don't think women are mature enough at 18 to make such choices to perform, poor ditsy dames. They know not what they do, poor daft dears!

And what of the age of the male buyers? Hell, they're men. They're fine with this stuff!

Would we also raise the age of consent to 21? I know far more women (and men) scared and damaged by the affairs of the heart which accompany sexual relations than I do who were negatively impacted by porn or sex work of any sort ~ aside from the cultural connotations that is.

While this raising of the age limit is supposed to be a legal protection, and a quicker one than the changing cultural response to sexuality, I'd rather work on the long term objective. Let's stop making sex a sin. In a country where we often fall-back on such cries as "let the market dictate" why don't we face the facts that the market has spoken. US porn revenue exceeds the combined revenues of ABC, CBS, and NBC, and internationally, the pornography industry is larger than the revenues of the top technology companies combined: Microsoft, Google, Amazon, eBay, Yahoo!, Apple, Netflix and EarthLink.

We are sexual animals, beings if that makes you feel more enlightened. It's time to face that fact.

If at 18 you can fight and die for your country (God bless those who do/have) wherein a much more varied number of "indelible errors" can occur I'd say ~ then why not be granted the power and ability to make porn at that age?

If we view 18 as the age at which you can volunteer to be blown to bits (and with this current war, for many false reasons), surely we can accept the fact that they can choose to have sex ~ even if that sex is paid for and on camera.
