Ginger or Mary Ann?

Why are women always pit against one another, either directly in competition for a man, or the subject of public/viewer talk as to which is 'better?'

I started wondering about this when reminiscing the cast of WKRP in Cincinnati. There was & still is talk over “Jennifer or Bailey?” from that show. And it got me thinking...

Why do ‘we’ always pit the sweet, girl next door, with her ‘natural look’ (which we all know for TV & film takes as long as the ‘glamour girl’ look) against the glamour, buxom, made-up woman?

Sure, I know there are ’types’ of women, and ’types’ that a man or woman prefers when looking for a date or what have you, but is the constant theme of one or the other being ‘hotter,’ ’more do-able,’ well, isn’t it just time for it to end?

I don’t mind if a group of men sit around & talk about it; mainly as I have no control over it *wink* But do we need that re-current theme underscoring if not driving our entertainment daily?

Look at so many of the ’romances’ put out by Hollywood. How many of them have the themes of ’sex pot vs girl next door’ in a battle over some man? Usually, the ’sex pot’ is a vixen who lies, cheats, or is so lusty as to not be trusted, and the slim, athletic woman, the sweet natural girl is the winner.

Message to men: Pick a safe girl who, by virtue of lacking the rack-ing, will possess ‘real’ virtues.

Message to women: Battle for a man, compete as there are so worthy, so few, that you must view all women as competition for the prize.

Those are the standard complaints of the message. And, yes, those messages are there. But they are so obvious, so trite, so contrary to reality, that they are laughable to most of us. But what of the other messages? The more insidious ones?

Doesn’t this battle of the chicks imply that a large bust is a sign of evil? A woman who’s figure makes men look, surely she must be as unable to control her desires, her whims, as the men that look at her. She of the curvaceous figure must be ridden with impulse control. A body for sin must equal the willingness to be sinful. She can’t help it, but she sure isn’t worthy of commitment. You can’t bring *her* home to meet the folks!

Maybe I just look into things too much. But then again, I am not the only one who has felt this way.

On the other hand, it is kinda fun to play those ’Ginger or Mary Ann’ games. Especially if everyone is saying Mary Ann, and I say Ginger...
