What’s The Deal With Phone Sex? Part One

Phone sex was the original virtual sex; the telephone the first technology to provide interactive real-time sex.

Typically speaking, when done right*, phone sex should lead to mutual masturbation and orgasm ~ unless it’s done professionally, with a phone sex operator (PSO), in which case “done right” means all comes out all right for the customer.

However, in a digital age of ever-increasing masturabatory and virtual sex options, some say phone sex is as antiquated and quaint as a candlestick telephone and that PSOs are in a dying profession.

*snort*

I don’t know where they get-off saying that. Like most every adult business, there are few numbers to prove anyone’s case. (Conservative US lobbying group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington claimed in 2005 that “phone sex generates between $750 million and $1 billion in revenues each year with as much as 50 percent being retained by U.S. long distance carriers.” But that doesn’t show movement up or down of of any sort.)

But we do know that the professional pay-for-it-as-we-know-it phone sex industry which began in the 1980s has survived everything from the golden age of porn home video (VHS) and porn websites to cam sites.

The shake out of the biz and the struggling economy was creating a lot of desperate, out of work people and phone sex, webcams and dancing was an easy fallback for quick income. The ones who were good at it and smart about it, understood that there was quite a large opportunity to get clientele who were willing to pay out the nose of unique fantasy experiences.

While most porn was easily accessible, unique & personalize experiences were not, and there was quite an affluent market for it.

Basically, people were getting bored with porn, because there was just so much of it, free online.

Instead, they wanted something unique and phone sex workers were in the prime position to take advantage of this demand and were charging between.99 cents and $20 a MINUTE for it!

If that doesn’t sound credible enough for you, consider this:

A) New phone sex sites have just launched in the past two years. Along with My Phone Site, there’s Verified Call, which was started by former Match.com vice president, Kurt Vogner.

And B) mainstream media’s been covering the increased demand for phone sex operators. Shows such as Good Morning America, Chicago’s WGN radio, and others have focused on phone sex work in the past few years.

Do phone sex websites have less traffic than say typical visual porn sites or even cam sites? Sure they do. And why wouldn’t they; phone sex requires a telephone connection, not a connection to the Internet. A-duh. But it’s clear from the investments in phone sex businesses and media stories that phone sex remains not only a safe way to participate in fantasy sex but a popular one.

As for just why that is, stay tuned for part two!

* I should clarify that “done right” may or may not mean an orgasm, as orgasm denial is a huge fetish and part of any sex work services; but that’s for another time.
