In a Darker Context -- The Cathartic and Misunderstood Nature of Horrific Art
In this fast-paced technological age, when one looks around and observes the current state of our planet, one has to ask: Have our natural human instincts become so intermingled with the teachings of civilized society that we have forgotten where our inbred nature ends and the conventions of socially accepted "norms" begin? | |

Instead of banning this youth’s creative compulsions, shaming and ostracizing him for his natural creative affinity toward horrific art, why not encourage this desire to create with words? And if the teacher and administration did harbor genuine concern for this boy’s mental state after reading his grisly tale, why wasn’t a tactful meeting called with the young man to assess his state of mind, and any possibilities of abuse? Instead, this child was persecuted for his natural talents, shamed as if he had committed a crime. I felt a chill go through me when I read of this event, and witch trials from our brutal, superstitious past wafted through my thoughts.
As a parent, I am glad you mentioned looking into the reasons 'why'. While I am all about encouraging creativity, and anti-censorship, I would be concerned if my child began such dark pursuits. Many therapists could use the art/writings to work through the problem and visions/depictions could allow the child who *was* suffering with something a outlet for control.
Will modern society return to the days when one was persecuted for being different, for living an alternative lifestyle?

Taking up DeeDee's thread, I would shudder to think what would happen to Poe in today's school system. Having read the obligatory Halloween stories of mayhem in the auditorium for so many years, I know that a teen's writing is a way of dealing with every-day stress. And even the most novice of administrators can and should be able to tell the difference between fantasy and a real threat.
Yes, we are being persecuted for being different, but I believe (hopefully not in vain)that the pendulum is swinging back to a more tolerant way of thinking and we all have to do our best to return to a humane way of co-existing with our fellow beings and a tolerance that allows each of us to find our own "bliss." | | | | Angela Makes Men Drool

Yes, yes, yes. I really think everytime we "repress" (disguised as "protect") we are robbing others of the intellectual and spirtual growth so necessary to life, itself. And it dumbs us down as a people, a society.

Dee Dee - Many therapists could use the art/writings to work through the problem and visions/depictions could allow the child who *was* suffering with something a outlet for control
Exactly, Dee Dee. I know, coming from a less-than-perfect background, darker art has always helped me work through a lot of my problems, and has provided me with a positive outlet for aggression, on and off, throughout my life. Who would I have been without that outlet? Don't know if I want to think about that...Robbing someone of a healthy therapeutic outlet is just rash and ridiculous. To get to the heart of something like this, the teacher should've looked deeper, rather than acting impulsively, imho.

So very true, Jewel, and an excellent example! Adolescents go through an extreme amount of internal chaos--emotionally/mentally and horomonally--when they reached that stage of maturity between a child and between an adult. Sometimes, they have to interpret that chaos through, perhaps, darker art forms, or alternative art forms. It doesn't mean they are going to be a mass murderer when they grow up. It simply means they choose an alternative to the average. I know I interpreted my teenage years through a darker lens, and I am a fairly well adjusted, albeit quirky, adult. :)

In terms of subcultures and the underground, alternative mediums of entertainment in general, I am seeing a huge outpouring of acceptance and support! I can't help but be leary of the mainstream, but then that is a bias that comes from some stories in my past, so I admit I am not entirely without my biases. *grins* But, I am hopeful for the future. I like to think the human race is intelligent enough to learn how essential tolerance is to our evolution of society. :)

I could not agree more, Angela! As I said somewhere else recently, I was very lucky growing up, in that, although my parents weren't perfect, they did let me grow up in a very individualistic environment. My father always told me, "Never say you can't. You can do anything." And, I think carrying that motto with me over the years has helped me to develop into the individual I am today. Now, what if he had tried to mold my mind into what he wanted me to be, or if my mom had tried to do the same? I am grateful I was given some liberal freedoms to find myself as a person, growing up. And I think all human beings should be allowed to learn through experience. When we repress, or "protect", we atrophy the human spirit and intellectual potentials.
And yes, I will indeed come back often! :D Or Gracie may spank my bottom red! hehe Besides, I've been browsing the articles here, and this place is just to great not to hang out at!
(P.S. Angela - I caught the show you and Gracie put on! hehe It was quite a show, indeed! When is the next showing? *grins*)

Why should horror authors be exempt when those of us who just don't do missionary for procreation reasons are persecuted? Damn unfair and it does dumb us all down. But hey, I don't make the rules; just break them :p
